Genocide in Gaza: A look at the mainstream Western media since October 7
If the Western mainstream media is to be believed, the Palestinians in Gaza were living in the earthly equivalent of heaven until October 7. Then Hamas happened.
A random guest gets invited to a mainstream TV news show.
News show host: Do you condemn Hamas for what they did on October 7?
Random guest: You know October 7 didn’t happen in a vacuum. Israel is literally an occupying force in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Their occupation is deemed illegal by international law.
And it gets worse.
The Israelis have completely blockaded the Gaza Strip since 2007; they control Gaza’s food, water, and electricity supply. They actually calculated the dietary requirements of their captives to let in just enough food for the residents to survive and not die of hunger.
The residents of Gaza cannot leave their tiny strip by land, water, or air. Their boundary with Israel is fenced with walls, barbed wires, and sophisticated surveillance machinery that gets triggered even when a stray cat comes in contact with it.
Gazans are living, in effect, in a concentration camp that is bombarded every now and then by state-of-the-art weaponry developed by the Israelis and supplied to it by its friends, the United States of America, and other countries in the West. The Israelis test their weapons on the Palestinians in Gaza and then sell the same weapons to clients worldwide, telling them that they are battle-tested.
Gazans are subjected to chemical weapons. There is documented evidence of the Israelis dropping white phosphorus on the densely populated enclave.
The Israelis get unconditional support from the United States of America, receiving nearly $4 billion in aid from the United States each year, and every time they raise a request for emergency funding, it is invariably granted by the US Congress.
Meanwhile, the residents of Gaza, 70% of whom are refugees from 1948 — when they were terrorised and chased away by the Zionists — and 1967 — when the Israelis annexed the enclave as well as the West Bank in contravention of international law — live in poverty and destitution. Nearly half of the population is unemployed, with no hope of finding employment in the besieged enclave. They have no prospect of escaping the enclave either, other than in the rarest of cases — if their occupier allows it.
With the blockade firmly in place and Israel in no mood to treat them as equals, the residents of Gaza see no way out of their misery … *gets interrupted*
News show host: But do you condemn Hamas?
Random guest: Let’s take the example of the West Bank, where there is no Hamas. In the West Bank, where Israel is an illegal occupying force, the Israelis have built numerous settlements in contravention of international law. They have built settler colonies inside the West Bank, with nearly half a million Israeli settlers from all over the world living in them. The settlers literally steal the houses of the Palestinians, pushing them out of their ancestral property. And all this takes place under the watchful eyes of the Israeli army. The heavily armed settlers work like militia, attacking, beating, shooting, and even killing Palestinians for no other reason than just being Palestinians.
Moreover, when the Palestinians in the West Bank aren’t getting killed, they are subjected to a string of horrifying abuses, including house demolitions, night curfews, checkpoints, walls, permits, racial discrimination, and ethnic prejudice.
And let me remind you again: there is no Hamas in the West Bank. What then… *gets interrupted*
